Robert James Aitken

I am a general surgeon with a special interest in colorectal surgery. I graduated from the University of London. I did most of my surgical training at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town. After seven years I moved to Edinburgh to finish my training and to undertake the research for my thesis. Following that I worked in Edinburgh for eight years as a consultant general surgeon with a special interest in colorectal surgery. In 1998 I moved to Perth to work in the Department of Surgery at the University of Western Australia at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital. I am an accredited Visiting Medical Practitioner at Hollywood Private Hospital and Joondalup Health Campus.

I retain a strong interest in the academic aspects of surgery. This includes publications reporting my own results for rectal cancer surgery. I have an active role in teaching medical undergraduate. I am actively involved in the training of surgical trainees and am one of the hospital supervisors for the Royal Australasian College of Surgeon. I have a number of publications in this area.

I have a long standing interest in surgical audit and its application in surgical safety and quality. I was instrumental is establishing the Western Australia Audit of Surgical Mortality. This has now been expanded into the Australian and New Zealand Audit of Surgical Mortality. It was the success of this mortality audit that led the Health Department of Western Australia to establish the Western Australian Review of Mortality, a process that reviews all in-hospital deaths in the state.
