Robert James Aitken

I am a general surgeon with a special interest in colorectal surgery.  I graduated from
the University of London.  I did most of my surgical training at Groote Schuur Hospital
in Cape Town.  After seven years I moved to Edinburgh to finish my training and to undertake the research for my thesis.  Following that I worked in Edinburgh for eight
years as a general surgeon with a special interest in colorectal surgery.  In 1998 I
moved to Perth to work in the Department of Surgery at University of Western
Australia at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital.  I am also accredited as a Visiting
Medical Practitioner at Hollywood Private Hospital and Joondalup Health Campus.

I retain a strong interest in the academic aspects of surgery.  I continue to publish
research and audit papers.  This includes publications reporting my own results for
rectal cancer surgery.  I have an active role in teaching medical undergraduate
and surgical trainees and have a number of publications in this area.

I have a long standing interest in surgical audit and its application in surgical safety
and quality. Most recently I was instrumental is establishing the Western Australia
Audit of Surgical Mortality.  This has now been adopted by the Royal Australian
College of Surgeons and is being expanded to cover the whole of Australia.
